1973 marked the golden era in the history of Ajax Amsterdam. Nine of the eleven players in the team were world-class stars who played a decisive role in the club’s success, and to this day they are remembered as legends by fans and football experts alike. During this season, Ajax won the Dutch Championship, the KNVB Cup, and lifted the European Cup (Beker van Europa) for the third consecutive time, an achievement that remains one of the greatest in the club’s history.
Behind the success on the pitch, however, stood a far less visible yet highly influential figure: Bekeffy, a Hungarian-born football agent who later became a Belgian citizen after fleeing Hungary in 1956. He represented the most important players of Ajax’s golden generation—often as their sole agent. Abroad, he maintained close relationships with legendary figures of the Hungarian football diaspora, including Ferenc Puskás and László Kubala, and over time he himself became a respected and legendary figure in international football circles.
Bekeffy coordinated players’ affairs, including transfers and contract negotiations, and this focused, professional background work played a crucial role in ensuring Ajax’s excellence not only on the field but also at an organizational level. At one point, a single individual represented the most significant players of European Cup-winning teams—an extraordinary record that still stands today.
The combination of exceptional talent on the pitch and disciplined, professional management off it enabled Ajax’s early-1970s squad to become true global superstars. Bekeffy’s legacy and network remain unparalleled not only in the history of Ajax, but also in Hungarian football history. Although he never received the full public recognition he deserved due to his death in 1988, he is still remembered with great respect and affection—as a Hungarian who left a lasting mark on world football.
