Sándor Lukács made 260 top-flight appearances for Honvéd Budapest, scoring six goals. He could have joined Ajax Amsterdam when his team beat the Dutch club 4-1 at the Honvéd Stadium in 1976. Legendary Hungarian football manager Jenő Békeffy offered the player a contract to play in the Netherlands, but during the communist era, Lukacs was declared politically unreliable in Hungary and was not allowed to sign for Ajax Amsterdam.
