“For John, it turned out to be Valencia, where he ended up through the mediation of the Hungarian football agent Bekeffi. ‘I didn’t have any other options – at least not that I know of. But I found it exciting,’ he said.”

Johnny Rep earned 42 caps for the Dutch national team between 1973 and 1981, scoring 12 goals. He took part in two World Cups — in 1974 and 1978 — and was a member of the Dutch side that reached the final both times, finishing as runners-up. In 1976, he also helped the Netherlands win the bronze medal at the European Championship in Yugoslavia.
